Sunrise Group & Audi confirmed as title & presenting sponsors for LPGA Taiwan Championship 2012

(Taipei, June 28, 2012) Nearly eight months after the curtain fell on the hugely successful Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship 2011, organizers confirmed today that Sunrise Group and Audi Taiwan will once again be the title and presenting sponsors respectively. The Championship will be hosted for the second year by the Sunrise Golf & Country Club, taking place from October 25 to October 28, 2012.

The inaugural Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship 2011, Taiwan’s first LPGA event which culminated with Taiwan native and No. 1 player in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings Yani Tseng lifting the champion’s trophy, is widely considered one of the most successful sporting events ever in Taiwan. An incredible 67,000 fans visited Sunrise G&C during the four days of the tournament, setting an all-time attendance record for any sporting event in Taiwan.

“The support that the LPGA received during our first trip to Taiwan was tremendous,” said LPGA Commissioner Michael Whan. “I think that everyone was impressed with the enthusiasm and golf knowledge shown by all of the fans that came out during the week. The over-all experience for the players, and the impressive galleries, clearly resulted in a world-class event. Great location, great fans, and great business partners such as Sunrise and Audi – with ingredients like these, the LPGA is certainly looking forward to our return to Taiwan.”

Organizers announced a number of changes in tournament field and ticketing sales for 2012. The total field will be made up of the top 68 eligible LPGA players plus 10 special invited players, down from last year’s field of 80 players plus 10 special invites. In addition, online and in-store ticket booking will be handled by 7-Eleven’s popular iBon system. However, the total prize money remains unchanged at USD 2 million.

Sunrise Group chairman Tien-Ya Hsu, who is also the chairman of Taiwan’s golf governing body GAROC, remarked: “I felt very proud and deeply touched that so many people came out to support this event last year. I have no doubt we will convert all the appreciation and encouragement from fans and supporters into staging an even better event this year. Our fans and supporters will be pleased to hear, I have further invested on the golf course and planted some 200,000 trees and flowers after last year’s Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship to welcome all golf fans.”

Seeing the LPGA make its debut tour event in Taiwan and witnessing it blossom into a marquee sporting event is nothing short of a dream come true for many sports and golf fans in Taiwan. It is also believed the success of this event will pave the way to inspire more young golfing talent from Taiwan to be the next Yani.

According to statistics compiled by tournament co-organizer and promoter IMG, more than 300 journalists from the international and local media community were on hand to cover the event last year, generating USD 22 million in equivalent media advertising values. “In addition, footage of the Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship 2011 was telecast to some 187 million households in 29 countries, “said general manager of IMG Taiwan Carol Su.

Many of LPGA’s top players who participated in this event last year were impressed by the huge gallery and the outpouring of support from local fans. Yani Tseng, undoubtedly the recipient of the most fanfare, said in a pre-recorded message to her fans in Taiwan: “I can’t wait to see you again in October!”

In the inaugural Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship, Yani Tseng carded a four round total of 272(-16), including a bogey-free 66 in the final round to seal the deal, for a five-shot victory over co-runners-up Azahara Munoz of Spain and Korea’s Amy Yang.
